I
recently won a collection of 6 children’s books by Ms. Asselin. This review is
for The Case of the New Kid on the Block which is the prequel for The Alex
Mysteries series of books by this author. The following is my honest opinion.
Being
a child of the 1950’s this series of books reminds me of the Nancy Drew
Mysteries written for girls and The Hardy Boys written for boys, buy for much
younger audience.
In
this prequel we learn Alexis, or Lexi as she’s known to her friends, all of
sudden discovers a note saying “LOSER” taped to her locker, but who did it? The
only suspect is the new kid in school, Alexander. But why would he single out
her? We know one thing. Since this the prequel for a series, we know these two
Alexes will eventually join forces to solve mysteries together.
In
this story we follow Lexi as she becomes a very young Sherlock Holmes to deduce
who the note culprit is and what she does to find out. The writing is one which
grabs its young reader’s interest and attention to read the entire book in one
sitting. Could it be Alexander is too shy to approach Lexi to become his friend
so he decides on using this ploy. We all know how awkward it can be for boys
and girls to interact at this age, and this book attempts to teach them how
they can work together and become friends.
For
entertaining and teaching its young readers about the above, I’m giving this
prequel volume 5 STARS.
